About Me

My photo
I'm a husband, a dad, a son, a grandson, a pastor, & now a grandpa, too! Those are the basic hats I wear in my daily life. I was born & raised in rural Pennsylvania couple of miles from the New York border in a small town, Shinglehouse (Potter County). I struggle with my weight & my own quirks just like everyone else does. I became a United Methodist pastor in 1996 and was ordained in 2003. While I'm officially Methodist, I also consider myself a “charismatic” Christian, as well as an “evangelical”, although not everything identified with either of those labels fits me perfectly. I enjoy genealogy but seldom have time to do much with it. I like playing with eBay. I like to read, watch movies, camp, hike, and talk. I LOVE to write, but usually don't worry too much about formal grammar... instead choosing to write as I probably would speak. And even though I can spell pretty well, I'm a lousy typist, so be gracious. I update my blogs as often as I can, but I have a real life that demands me NOT being at the computer all the time... so there are dry spells!

Benjamin Haynes in 'A Journey In Time'

I "met" a fellow researcher trying to follow up on a date of death on my Great-great-great grandfather Benjamin Haynes today. After some checking, I found the reference upon which I based my claim of his death in February 1889. It was from Harold F. Baker's A Journey In Time: 1811-1986. Because Baker's book was primarily a locally distributed work, I decided to makeshare the hihlights from Baker's book.

While Baker's index identifies 12 references for Benjamin, 8 of them actually refer to Benjamin's son Benjamin A. Haynes.

There are four direct references to Benjamin in the book.

On page 43: Benjamin Haynes is identified as one of the 35 taxpayers in the Tax Book dated 1858.

On pages 124 and 125, Baker introduces the reader to Benjamin and his family.
"The author does not know where the Haynes family came from, but the 1860 census records that Benjamin (49) was born in New York state as was his wife Mary Ann Stone (41) and their two older children, Oliver (22) and Walter (20). Other children were John (18), Phillip (14), Benjamin A. (13), Truman (11), Nathan (10), Nancy (8), Charles (6), and Ida (2)."

"They lived in the upper Bell Run area for many years. Benjamin died in February, 1889 and his wife, Mary Ann Stone, died in December 1900. As the children married, they too settled in the Bell Run and Shinglhouse area but some moved into McKean County. The only exception was Benjamin A. who came to Weimer Hollow on the Sartwell Creek portion of Pleasant Valley Township. He married Eleanor Reed, (b.1846) a daughter of James and Elizabeth (Burt) Reed. Their children were Nora (b. 1868) who married Richard Jay and also lived in Weimer Hollow. The Jay's children were Elizabeth, James, and Ella."

On page 132, we read of the settling of the Haynes family farm.
"The next property north of the Brown residence was settled around 1860 by the Benjamin Haynes family. They had ten children. Some later lived nearby in homes of their own. Also, some of Benjamin's grandchildren were living here in 1950. The last was the Eugene Haynes family. At the present time [1986] not a person with the  Haynes name is living here. The remains of the former home of the Willis T. Haynes family can be seen here. They later moved to Myrtle."

I'll return to Benjamin and Mary Ann again soon.

RPPC Reynoldsville FIRE!

May was my last post because I began filling boxes to move. Now, three months later, I'm beginning to get a handle on things. So here goes:
=======================================================

This picture from an old RPPC is identified as The rear of the Velvet Ice Cream Co. store that burned." I saw the image, but do not have the actual card. But I did wonder if anyone else knows about this store, the fire, the date, or who the kids might be. Personally, I think it's cool to see the icicles.

Since finding this picture on eBay this past Spring, I have since discovered a site that refers to this picture: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/reynoldsville-pa-rppc-fire-scene-119260996

Sharon Center Store

When I was newly born, my parents and I lived in an upstairs apartment above the Haynes' Store in the village of Sharon Center, about three miles from Shinglehouse, PA. Owned by my great-grandparents, Earl and Vivien (Meacham) Haynes, people apparently came from miles around to get their supplies and groceries.

Even though I only lived there for a couple of years, I can still remember going to Grandpa and Grandma Haynes' store and the joy and excitement of getting to pick out candy without having to pay!

Grandpa and Grandma Haynes lived in a built on apartment attached to the first floor of the store. My earliest memories of Halloween trick-or-treats are of Mom & Dad taking us kids, in costume, to their 'house' before we took off for any other trick-or-treating.

All of this walking down memory lane was prompted by this picture of the store I found today. The building was torn down years ago, at least ten or more.

1892 Kane Directory

One of the neatest things I discovered a few years back in the Kane, PA library was a series of city directories. At the time I was exploring my wife's ancestors with the last names of BURROWS, CLARK, DIPPO, HOKE, & HOUSLER. Here are my notes on people with those last names that I discovered in the 1892 Kane Directory. Information appears in this order:

page #, last name, first name, occupation, address

p. 79, Clark, A.D.,  bank cashier, 216 Greeves
p. 79, Clark, Mrs. A.D., 216 Greeves
p. 79, Clark, Harold, 216 Greeves
p. 79, Clark, Mrs. M., 216 Greeves
p. 79, Clark, Evelyn, bds, 415 Haines
p. 79, Clark, D.S., bookkeeper, 77 Fraley

                I'll add more years (1908, 1912, 1914-15, 1918-1919, 1921-22, 1924, 1928) over the upcoming days and weeks.

John E. Mix pix

Two days ago, we highlighted the info and family of John E. Mix (1864-1951). Here's one of the pictures I have of this, my great-great-great grandfather.
John E. Mix holding Mary Lue Mix
(click on pic to make it bigger)
This picture is of John E. Mix holding his granddaughter, Mary Lue Mix. Since Aunt Mary Lou was born in 1928, I estimate that this picture must have been taken around 1930, making John about 66 years old.

John E. Mix

I have blogged about Dayton E. Mix and included his kids and such. Today, I want to highlight his father: John E. Mix.

John was born 28 August 1864 to John Mix and Nancy A. Thurber Mix in Bolivar, NY (Allegany County). He died 25 Jan 1951 in the same town in which he was born.

On 15 April 1882, again in Bolivar, he married the former Mary E. Knapp. Mary had also been born, and later died, in Bolivar, NY. She was born 22 July 1865 and died 6 Aug 1932.

Their children:
Maude R. Mix (DOB: 17 March 1883)
Dayton E. Mix (DOB: 28 Feb 1886)
Leona G. Mix (DOB: 25 Dec 1887)
Morton E. Mix (DOB: 18 Sep 1890)
Lena E. Mix (DOB: 26 Jan 1894)
Leon E. Mix (DOB: 23 April 1896)

After Mary died, he married Winifred Keesler on 9 December 1934 in Wellsville, NY (Allegany County). At this time, I have no record of any joint children or step-children.
A few random notes I have, related to me by my grandfather John Dayton Mix (1913-1994), who was grandson of John E. Mix:
- John E. went to school through the fourth grade.
- Occupations included building oil rigs and being a carpenter
- He was a member of the Seventh Day Baptist Church
- He escaped from a building building in 1924. To read more, click here.

RPPC Eldred Youth with Bike

This is one of those pictures I have found sometime over the years that has no name (and about which I have no idea).

It is a real picture PostCard and it says "young man with bike from Eldred."

On the slight chance that someone may recognize this youth, I thought I needed to share the picture.

If you DO recognize him, please let me know!
