About Me

My photo
I'm a husband, a dad, a son, a grandson, a pastor, & now a grandpa, too! Those are the basic hats I wear in my daily life. I was born & raised in rural Pennsylvania couple of miles from the New York border in a small town, Shinglehouse (Potter County). I struggle with my weight & my own quirks just like everyone else does. I became a United Methodist pastor in 1996 and was ordained in 2003. While I'm officially Methodist, I also consider myself a “charismatic” Christian, as well as an “evangelical”, although not everything identified with either of those labels fits me perfectly. I enjoy genealogy but seldom have time to do much with it. I like playing with eBay. I like to read, watch movies, camp, hike, and talk. I LOVE to write, but usually don't worry too much about formal grammar... instead choosing to write as I probably would speak. And even though I can spell pretty well, I'm a lousy typist, so be gracious. I update my blogs as often as I can, but I have a real life that demands me NOT being at the computer all the time... so there are dry spells!

Mary Ann Stone Haynes

MARY ANN STONE HAYNES

During the American Bicentennial (1976), my great-grandmother, Laura Vivien Meacham Haynes, first showed me this picture of her husband Earl's paternal grandmother, Mary Ann Stone Haynes.

According to Harold F. Baker's A Journey in Time: 1810-1986, Mary was born around 1819 in New York State. She died in December 1900. She was the second wife of Benjamin Haynes (~1811-1889).

Carrie E. Cleveland Haynes

Yesterday, I wrote about discrepancies I discovered on ancestry.com re: the parents of my great-grandfather (Earl Truman Haynes). Then I offered the facts I have on record about W.T. (William Truman Haynes).

Today, I want to address the differences in fact regarding W.T.'s wife, Carrie. Apparently there are ancestry.com records listing her as Carrie Sutherland. Perhaps there was another marriage before W.T., but it seems unlikely. My Grandma Haynes' notes about her in-laws refer to her as "Carrie E. Cleveland Haynes." Those notes have this notation at the bottom: "W.T. and Carrie Cleveland married Feb. 1871."
(You can see that document in my April 3, 2010 post by clicking here.)

According to those family records, W.T. was born in 1848 and Carrie in 1853. That means at their wedding in 1871 he was 22 and she was 17. It seems very unlikely that she was married to someone named Sutherland prior to marrying W.T. I haven't yet figured out how to track down the sources cited by individuals' ancestry.com family trees, so I can't really explain the Sutherland references.

A picture of hers and W.T.'s gravestone in the Myrtle Cemetery is in my January 2, 2012 post.

William Truman Haynes

William Truman Haynes

I was just looking through some of the entries on Ancestry.com earlier this evening and came across at least 4 references for this Grandpa Haynes of mine (my great-great grandfather). And all four had discrepancies when compared to my records!

First of all, the name: All 4 referred to him as Truman William Haynes.

The only way I've ever heard of him was either as "W.T." or "TRUMAN."
I went back to double check the notes I inherited from my great-grandmother, Laura Vivien Meacham Haynes, and she also refers to her father-in-law as William Truman Haynes.

(You can see that document in my April 3, 2010 post by clicking here.)

I'll address the rest soon.
